I was contacted by Raw-Spice-Bar right before the holidays (Halloween/Thanksgiving) asking me if I’d like to try out and review their monthly subscription of Raw Spices. Of course since I love to cook I was intrigued by Raw-Spice-Bar and accepted to try it out! They sent me a package right away and it contained three separate small spice packages. For November the highlight country was Ethiopia and the three spices were:
Pumpkin Pie Spice.
Berbere.
Ethiopian Mitmita.
Perfect for the holidays! The recipe included sounds delicious and super easy. Pumpkin Spice Doba Kolo, I’m totally into pumpkin spice ricotta donuts this time of year.
The spice package recommends brewing into your coffee, sprinkling onto roasted squash (yummy!), stirring into yogurt, ice cream, or adding to cookies, breads or other baked goods. There’s plenty in each package, .4oz so that’s enough to use in various things.
Ingredients: Cinnamon, Ginger, Allspice, Nutmeg, Cloves, Mace, Star Anise, and spices.
This Berbere spice mix sounds like it’s spicy but not too spicy. I really can't handle spicy stuff, but am willing to try this spice mix out.
Recipe for Berbere Roasted Carrots, Fennel & Mint sounds yummy for the holidays. I really like that Raw-Spice-Bar includes recipe cards for all the spices they send. It’s super helpful and you don’t have to waste time looking online for a recipe for a spice you may not have heard of before.
The package says Berbere probably the most famous spice blend of Ethiopian cuisine. It’s smoky, spicy, and complex. Traditionally used in nearly all Ethiopian dishes but particularly shines in stews and on meats and poultry. It suggests to try as a rub on roast chicken, roast veggies, or to stir into oil and vinegar as a dip.
Ingredients: Dried Chiles, Sweet Paprika, Coriander, Ginger, Cardamom, Fenugreek, Nutmeg, Allspice, Cloves, Black Peppercorns.
The recipe for Key Wat (Spicy Ethiopian Stewed Beef) sounds good. BUT I really can’t handle spicy food. It hurts too much! The recipe picture look yummy though, but I’m kinda scared to try this with the Mitmita spice mix!
The package says that this bright orange, crazy hot spice blend is probably Ethiopia’s second most famous spice mix. It adds a spicy hot kick to stew meats, lentils or grilled meats. It says it’s also great for using in place of hot sauce or Siracha as a powdered dip or condiment.
Ingredients: African Birds Eye Chili Peppers, Dried Red Chiles, Cardamom, Black Peppercorns, Garlic.
